District New Cell Phone Policy

DPSCD Families and Students,

As we approach the start of the 2026-2027 school year this Monday, I want to share an important update about the District’s cell phone policy.

Earlier this year, Governor Whitmer signed Michigan Public Act 2, outlawing the use of cell phones during instructional time. When signing the law, Governor Whitmer pointed to research indicating that when students put their phones down, their grades improve. She emphasized that phones are one of the biggest sources of distraction in classrooms today, and she named concerns about the effects of constant phone and social media use on students’ attention spans, mental health, and social relationships. The District shares these concerns and believes that protecting instructional time is one of the most important things we can do to support students’ learning and well-being.

Beginning on Monday, it is the District’s expectation that cell phones are not used from the entry bell to the dismissal bell.  Individual schools will communicate to families if their school policy is to collect and return devices daily or if devices may stay in students’ possession but off and away. Please note, some individual high schools will permit the use of cell phones during lunchtime only; individual schools will communicate with families directly should this be permissible. Violations of this policy are subject to consequences as outlined in the Code of Conduct.

We know that as parents and guardians, staying connected to your child throughout the day matters, especially in moments that feel urgent. This policy does not cut off communication between you and your school. If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact your school’s main office directly, and staff will help relay time-sensitive messages or connect you with your child as needed.
